raining in nevada

i LOVE it when it rains here, not like other places where it rains all the time. a great excuse to nothing but hole up in my art studio. first jewelry - i need to make a bradelet with the new indian head pennies i have. then start a new pastel, this one of an old truck i saw on the way home from a our last horseshow. i just love the way the colors of it blended with its surrounding. camouflaged ol ford, beautiful nevada.

"Too Pretty to Eat" by Carolyn Jean Thompson

9 x 12 watersoluable color pencils on paper
This was a fun project.  I began it on an airplane on the way to vacation.  It was very easy to paint this on the plane.  My sketchbook folds back flat and fits on the tray table, my 8 x 10 photo reference rested against the seat in front, the pencils were in a pouch on my lap, and my water container brush could soften the pencils into a watercolor wash.  Once I started this painting with this technique, I finished it at  home in the same manner for consistency.

"Vines and Moss" by Carolyn Jean Thompson

12 x 9 pastel
While visiting South Carolina, I painted some of the local scenes.  I especially enjoyed the huge live oaks with Spanish Moss, vines and ferns growning from the limbs.

"Watching the Stream" by Carolyn Jean Thompson

8 x 10 pastel
I love sitting by a stream and watching and studying it.  It is so peaceful.  The sounds of the splashing water tumbling over the rocks is like music.
